Two Notre Dame starters played the fewest snaps they have all season in the Fighting Irish’s 44-21 win over UNLV this past Saturday. Injuries had to do with both situations.

Linebacker Jack Kiser played five snaps. Safety Brandon Joseph played 10, all in the first half. Head coach Marcus Freeman said Monday Kiser has a deep thigh bruise. He did not practice Sunday but is expected to make a return Tuesday. Joseph got “nicked up,” meanwhile. He was still Notre Dame’s primary punt returner all afternoon, but he was limited as. a safety.

“We wanted to keep him out in terms of defense,” Freeman said of Joseph. “He still went back there and returned punts, did a good job, but that was a nick. He’ll be good to go this week.”

There were two other in-game injuries to monitor.

Notre Dame sophomore linebacker Prince Kollie injured himself sprawling to block a punt. He briefly went to the locker room but returned to play on defense and on special teams. Freeman said it was a leg injury.

Freeman said Kollie might have gotten stepped on. He joked Kollie was also more concerned with saying he blocked the punt, not senior defensive end Isaiah Foskey, instead of nursing his ailment. The injury still had Kollie down on the field for quite some time before he headed for the locker room to be examined, though.

“Shoot, you’d have thought he’d have been out for longer than a series by the way I was making fun of him on the field,” Freeman quipped. “‘You got to get up, man.’ But he bounced back. He bounced back.”

Freeman said Kollie practiced Sunday. He played 15 defensive snaps against UNLV.

Freshman cornerback Ben Morrison got the wind knocked out of him on a play Freeman said he should have stayed away from. UNLV was flagged for kick-catch interference on a punt, but Morrison took a heavy blow from a Rebels gunner near the bouncing ball. He played through it and logged 59 defensive snaps, the third most on the Notre Dame roster.

“I told Ben, ‘That’s what you get for touching the ball,'” Freeman said. “That’s a learning lesson there. … But he’s a tough kid. It was a tough game. They went after Ben Morrison a bit, but he stepped up to the challenge. It’s a part of that progression from high school to college. He’s a tough kid. He bounced back and played well.”
