Newsstand: Notre Dame OL Josh Lugg a semifinalist for William Campbell Trophy
Notre Dame has a semifinalist for college football’s most prestigious academic award. Grad student offensive lineman Josh Lugg is one of 156 players from all divisions of college football to appear on Wednesday’s midseason candidate list for the William V. Campbell trophy, which goes to the sport’s top senior or graduate scholar-athlete.
The award is given annually to a college football player in his final year of eligibility who has a grade point average of at least 3.2, displays outstanding football ability and exemplary school and community leadership.
Lugg is in his sixth season at Notre Dame and has played in 51 career games. He has made 23 starts across three positions – 17 at right tackle, five at right guard and one at center. He is the Irish’s starting right guard this season. He completed his undergraduate degree in fall 2020 and is currently pursuing a master’s in business analytics with a concentration in sports analytics.

The National Football Foundation will narrow down the Campbell trophy candidate list to a group of 12 to 14 finalists later this season. Each finalist will receive an $18,000 scholarship as part of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The winner will be announced Dec. 6.
This year is the 33rd season in which the Campbell Trophy will be awarded. Notre Dame has not had a recipient. Last year’s winner was Iowa State tight end Charlie Kolar.
