Newsstand: Notre Dame LB JD Bertrand accepts Senior Bowl invite
JD Bertrand is on his way to joining Marist Liufau as Notre Dame graduate student linebackers with one more year of eligibility who will instead declare for the NFL Draft. Bertrand accepted an invite to play in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Bertrand led Notre Dame in total tackles in each of the last three seasons. This year, he paced the team with 75. He was a two-year team captain for the Fighting Irish. As the starting middle linebacker, he was essentially the quarterback of the defense in each of Marcus Freeman’s first two years as head coach.
“There is no Notre Dame defense in the last two years without JD,” graduate student corner Cam Hart said. “He is the standard, and he’s the guy that we try to emulate. I don’t have anything bad to say about JD.”
While Bertrand is destined to join Liufau with an NFL Draft declaration, fellow graduate student linebacker Jack Kiser announced Wednesday he’s coming back for a sixth season. He’s in good standing to become a team captain and to take over Bertrand’s role as the leader of the Irish defense.
