Notre Dame football returns to South Bend for the first time in 2022 Saturday. And that means the Irish are back on their familiar television home.

NBC is broadcasting Notre Dame’s 2022 home opener against Marshall, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET. It has held the rights to the program’s home games since 1991 and is locked into them through 2025.

The most basic cable or streaming packages include NBC. The NBC broadcast feed will also be streamed on Peacock, as will the six NBC Notre Dame telecasts after it this year.

Notre Dame’s seven NBC games last year averaged 2.5 million viewers, down from 4.8 million in 2020. The 2019 figure for seven NBC games was 2.131 million.

Saturday is the debut for NBC’s new Notre Dame broadcast team. Jac Collinsworth, a 2017 graduate of the university, is the play-by-play announcer. Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is the color analyst, and Zora Stephenson is the sideline reporter. Collinsworth was part of NBC’s pregame and halftime Notre Dame coverage the last two seasons.

The Irish began this year with one of the most-watched college football games in recent years. Their 21-10 loss to Ohio State (televised on ABC) drew 10.5 million viewers, which was more than all but one FBS regular-season game last season (Ohio State vs. Michigan had 15.9 million).

Marshall, a Group of Five opponent that plays in the Sun Belt Conference, isn’t going to command the same viewership numbers. For reference, the 2019 home opener against Mountain West foe New Mexico drew 1.5 million viewers. A 2019 game vs. Bowling Green averaged 1.28. Those were the two lowest-rated games since NBC began televising the Irish. Last year’s home opener against Toledo was on Peacock.
