Newsstand: Notre Dame football shows support for Mississippi State coach Mike Leach

College football enthusiasts far and wide have voiced support for Mississippi State coach Mike Leach this week. Notre Dame joined them Monday.
The Fighting Irish football account posted a picture of a candle with the Mississippi State logo on it with the caption, “Lighting a candle and saying prayers for Coach Leach and the entire @HailStateFB program. Keep fighting Coach” with a green heart emoji. Leach was airlifted from Starkville, Miss., to Jackson on Sunday in response to what the university called a “health issue.”
As of Monday morning, MSU said Leach was in critical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in the state’s capital city. Mississippi State did not divulge further information on the cause for Leach’s condition. The Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported Leach suffered a heart attack and went without oxygen for “several minutes.” Leach, 61, was surrounded by family in the hospital all day Monday.
UPDATE: At 8:58 ET, Mississippi State University announced Leach died from complications of a heart condition Monday night.

Notre Dame tweets of the day
The Irish had a trio of players appear on the Associated Press All-America teams; junior tight end Michael Mayer and sophomore left tackle Joe Alt are first-teamers, and senior defensive end Isaiah Foskey is a second-team selection.
Mayer is a first-team selection from Sporting News or the American Football Coaches Association away from earning consensus All-American status. He would be the program’s third consensus All-American in as many years, joining Liam Eichenberg (2020) and Kyle Hamilton (2021).
