Number changes from updated 2023 Notre Dame football roster
There are some key Notre Dame football players who will sport new looks in 2023. Seven players from last year’s team changed their jersey numbers for the upcoming season. Those players are listed below.
Junior wide receiver Deion Colzie
Was: No. 16
Now: No. 0
Colzie is able to wear No. 0 after wide receiver Braden Lenzy decided to move on from football at the end of the 2022 season. Colzie wore No. 18 in high school. That number is currently taken by Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli.
Senior safety Xavier Watts
Was: No. 26
Now: No. 0
Watts has changed his number a few times while at Notre Dame. He wore No. 82 as a freshman. He practiced in No. 4 as a wide receiver and a defensive back last fall but ultimately wore No. 26 as a DB in every game he appeared in. Now, he’s claiming No. 0 on the defensive side. Notre Dame did not have a No. 0 on defense last year.

Senior running back Chris Tyree
Was: No. 25
Now: No. 2
Notre Dame will not have a high-flying offensive player sport No. 25, the number made famous in Irish lore by College Football Hall of Fame inductee Rocket Ismail from 1988-1990. Tyree wore No. 4 in high school. Now, in a year where it appears he’s slated to play more as a wide receiver, he’s making the move back to single digits. Tyree slips into the same number worn by graduate student safety DJ Brown.
Sophomore linebacker Jaylen Sneed
Was: No. 17
Now: No. 3
Sneed wore No. 3 at times in high school. He’s taking the numeral back and joining graduate student defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste (No. 1) and graduate student linebacker Marist Liufau (No. 8) as Notre Dame front-seven players sporing single-digit numbers. He’ll wear the same number as junior running back Logan Diggs.

Sophomore wide receiver Tobias Merriweather
Was: No. 15
Now: No. 5
Merriweather wore No. 5 in high school. With wide receiver Joe Wilkins Jr. moving on to Miami (Ohio), Merriweather is able to take his old number. Graduate student cornerback Cam Hart has worn No. 5 on the defensive side for a few years now.
Sophomore cornerback Jaden Mickey
Was: No. 21
Now: No. 7
Mickey wore No. 8 in high school. With Liufau still holding claim to it, Mickey gets one step closer and takes No. 7. Junior running back Audric Estime wears the same number on the offensive side.
Sophomore defensive lineman Tyson Ford
Was: No. 98
Now: No. 95
Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa made No. 95 a household number for Notre Dame a few years back. Ford will be looking to have similar success.
