Newsstand: NFL coach puts Notre Dame offensive coordinator rumors to bed
You can cross one name off your list of Notre Dame offensive coordinator options. Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson is not headed to South Bend after the Super Bowl.
He said so himself.
Johnson took part in a Super Bowl media session on Wednesday. He shot down the rumor that he’s going to meet with Irish head coach Marcus Freeman after the big game. Eagles reporter Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted that Johnson said he didn’t know where the report came from.
“I’m not going to Notre Dame,” Johnson told reporters.
The battle for the Irish OC job remains wide-open. Notre Dame graduate Tommy Rees held the job for three seasons before taking the same title at Alabama last week. Freeman has an important hire to make going into his second season as head coach. The Irish went 9-4 in year one.

Quote of the day
“Rees’ departure shakes up the ingredients of a potentially explosive offense. Notre Dame has its star quarterback, two future high-round draft pick offensive tackles, three proven running backs and a promising group of receivers. Rees, in what would have been his fourth season calling plays, could have truly aimed big. No more conceding talent gaps. No more going run-heavy because Freeman wanted to or because quarterback inconsistency necessitated it.
“Maybe a first-time playcaller could take that offense to impressive heights. But it’s too big a risk to take with the personnel aligned like this.”
