Don’t tell Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer about Ohio State having one of the best atmospheres in college football. He doesn’t want to hear it.

Mayer spoke to the local South Bend media after practice Wednesday evening. The preseason All-American was asked for his thoughts on Ohio Stadium — the famed “Horseshoe” — and he didn’t hide how he truly feels.

“I don’t think it’s any different than the other stadiums we’re going to be playing in this year,” Mayer said. “To me, it’s like, ‘home game, away game, just go play football.’ I’m not worried about it. Go out there and play the best ball we can play.”

It wasn’t a knock on Ohio State, its stadium or its fans. Rather, it was one of the best players at his position in the country letting reporters in on his mindset ahead of the highly-anticipated showdown between the No. 5 Fighting Irish and the No. 2 Buckeyes in primetime on Sept. 3.

Mayer is well on his way to finishing his career as the most decorated Notre Dame tight end of all time, and he’ll have accomplished the feat in just three seasons. If he catches 28 passes, gains 551 receiving yards and scores seven touchdowns, he’ll hold the all-time Notre Dame record in all three categories. Mayer caught 71 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore in 2021.

He’s not short on confidence. He said he’s always been in his “own little world” on the field.

“I don’t even hear anything outside when I’m playing football out there,” Mayer said. “I never even have to worry about it.”

Quote of the day

Mayer unquestionably had the quote of the day. His position coach came in second.

“What a great job this staff has done recruiting the position, let’s be honest. The two guys are great looking kids, they’re eager, they work, they want to learn and be great, you name it. They’re all there. What are the things we have to do as a young pup? We have to learn how to do this and why we’re doing it, then figure out why to do it when.”
