Preseason bowl projections continue to trickle out in the days before the season. The latest has Notre Dame ending its season in Miami.

The Irish are headed to the Orange Bowl for a rematch with Clemson in The Athletic’s bowl projections, which came out Tuesday. The teams are scheduled to play Nov. 5 in South Bend. They met twice in 2020, first at Notre Dame and then in the ACC Championship Game.

In years it doesn’t host a College Football Playoff semifinal game, the Orange Bowl puts an ACC team against an opponent from the SEC, Big Ten or Notre Dame. This is not a semifinal year for the Orange Bowl, which opens a tie-in spot for the Irish in a year where just one New Year’s Six at-large spot is available to them. The low number of at-larges is due to the Fiesta and Peach Bowls – which do not have conference ties – hosting the playoff semis.

Notre Dame last played in the Orange Bowl in 1996, a 31-26 loss to Florida State.

All told, the Irish have a 2-3 record in five Orange Bowl appearances. Their most recent victory in it was a 21-6 defeat of No. 1 Colorado in 1990.
