Several former Notre Dame players were on the fence this week. NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to 53 men before the regular season starts next week.

Former Fighting Irish icons Ian Book and Nick McCloud, for instance, were cut Tuesday by the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills, respectively. But they landed on their feet a day later. Book was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles, and McCloud went to the New York Giants.

Defensive tackle Kurt Hinish, who currently holds the all-time Irish record for most games played in a career, was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in April. he made the 53-man roster after a solid preseason showing that included a sack of Book.

A list of other former Irish players who did not make 53-man rosters included wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr., defensive lineman Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, defensive back Matthias Farley and quarterback Jack Coan. Only Coan’s status was unclear by late Wednesday night; the rest of those players were added to the practice squads of the teams they were cut by; Austin Jr. with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tagovailoa-Amosa and Farley with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Quote of the day

“The best thing I observed from him is the ability to make everybody in your organization feel important and also making sure they are important,. That’s what I want to make sure we reflect here. Everybody has to understand their role is just as valuable as mine as the head coach. I don’t care who you are.”
