2024 team records: Fighting Irish — 1-1 (W, 23-13 at Texas A&M; L, 16-14 vs. NIU); Boilermakers — 1-0 (W, 49-0 vs. Indiana State).

Noting Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish’s 2024 season drastically took on a new shape when they lost, 16-14, to 28.5-point underdog Northern Illinois in South Bend last Saturday … The loss came after a Week 1 win, 23-13, over then-No. 20 Texas A&M … The Irish’s defense gave up three plays of 25-plus yards, including an 83-yard touchdown catch and run, but the Notre Dame offense only mustered one play of 25-plus yards to combat that; it was a 34-yard touchdown rush for sophomore tailback Jeremiyah Love … The passing offense and the status of senior quarterback Riley Leonard has been the big topic of discussion in South Bend this week; Leonard injured his non-throwing shoulder against NIU but has been practicing and is expected to start against the Boilermakers … Leonard has not thrown a touchdown pass yet this season and has 2 interceptions.

Noting Purdue: The Boilermakers were one of two teams to have four opponents ranked in the top 10 of the preseason Associated Press Top 25 on its schedule, with Notre Dame obviously being one of those … Despite defense not being the program’s calling card — Purdue ranked 73rd in the FBS in yards allowed per play last season … The Boilermakers registered 35 sacks as a team in 2023, the third-most in program history and most since 2004; for reference, Notre Dame had 31 sacks last season … Purdue has had four All-Americans in the last three seasons, the most for the program in a three-year stretch since 1967-69, but the only one of those still suiting up for the Boilermakers is defensive back Dillon Thieneman … Purdue only has 1 turnover in its last three home games dating back to 2023, and the Boilermakers’ offense has racked up 1,640 yards of offense in that span.
