Newsstand: Former Nebraska, Texas QB Casey Thompson received interest from Notre Dame per ESPN
With Tyler Buchner having transferred to from Notre Dame to Alabama, the Fighting Irish quarterback outlook for 2023 is crystal clear. But it could have become quite a bit more clouded had the Irish landed Casey Thompson from Nebraska.
According to ESPN‘s Pete Thamel, there was actually a non-zero chance of that occurring.
In Thamel’s tweet Wednesday that broke the news of Thompson’s commitment to Florida Atlantic, he included Notre Dame among the schools that showed interest in the experienced signal-caller. The other programs of note were Auburn, Indiana, Houston and Texas State.
Thompson played in 19 games with 10 starts in four years at Texas. In one season at Nebraska, Thompson started 10 games and missed two because of injury. Staying healthy was an issue at Texas, too. Entering his sixth collegiate season, Thompson has completed 358-of-564 passes (63.5 percent) for 4,829 yards with 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Fake injury?
Herbstreit and Fowler skeptical of Tennessee injury
The Irish’s projected starter, Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman, has completed 944-of-1,597 passes (59.1 percent) for 12,976 yards with 110 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. Adding Thompson to the mix would have been nothing but a Buchner replacement — essentially a safety valve considering current backups Steve Angeli and Kenny Minchey have never attempted a pass in their college careers.
Buchner left for Tuscaloosa shortly after Hartman outplayed him in the Blue-Gold Game on April 22. Hartman went 13-of-16 for 189 yards and 2 touchdown passes. Buchner wen 8-of-18 with 1 interception and no scores. It appeared to be a close battle between the two all spring, but the departure was the final indicator otherwise.
