Former Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer knows a thing or two about elite quarterback play in college football. He coached some pretty good ones, Tim Tebow, J.T. Barrett and Dwayne Haskins to name a few. He doesn’t see in Notre Dame’s quarterbacks what he must’ve seen in those three.

“I still am amazed that Notre Dame’s gotta go to Wake Forest to get a transfer quarterback,” Meyer said on Urban’s Take with Tim May. “That doesn’t equate to me. Now, he’s a great player. But Notre Dame’s gotta go recruit them a five-star and they should have one, two and three excellent quarterbacks because it’s Notre Dame. Ohio State and those top blue blood teams, you should be in the mix on every top quarterback in America to get ’em.”

In addition to Hartman, the Irish have sophomore Steve Angeli and freshman Kenny Minchey on the roster as scholarship quarterbacks. Angeli was the No. 33 quarterback in the class of 2022 according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Minchey checked in at No. 14 in 2023.

Current commit CJ Carr is the No. 6 quarterback in the class of 2024. He’d be the Irish’s first top 10 quarterback signee since Phil Jurkovec in 2018. Jurkovec is entering his sixth college football season with his third different team. He’ll play against the Irish with Pitt in October.

Meyer wants to see the Irish boast the type of quarterbacks who are gone after three seasons because they’re that good and are able to go off to the NFL before their senior year.

“You go recruit you the best quarterback in the country,” Meyer said. “Develop ’em, let ’em play for two years and go be a first-round draft pick. For them to get where they have to get, that has to happen.”
