Notre Dame is not ranked. But the Fighting Irish are getting closer.

The Irish (3-2) beat then-No. 16 BYU (4-2) by a score of 28-20 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday. It was the first ranked win of head coach Marcus Freeman‘s career. Freeman improved to 3-3 as the man in charge of the Irish.

Notre Dame received 13 votes in the Coaches Poll and 48 in the Associated Press Poll following the victory. The Irish would be ranked No. 34 in the Coaches Poll and No. 30 in the AP Poll. BYU fell out of both polls with its loss to the Irish. The Cougars received 82 votes in the Coaches Poll and 91 in the AP Poll. They’d be ranked No. 26 in the Coaches Poll and No. No. 28 in the AP Poll.

Notre Dame fell out of both polls after losing to Marshall in Week 2 to drop to 0-2. It was the first time Notre Dame had not been ranked in the polls since September 2017, a snapped streak of 80 consecutive rankings. That was good for the fourth-longest streak in the country at the time.

Notre Dame still has to face three ranked teams in the final six games of the regular season. The Irish travel to No. 18/18 Syracuse on Oct. 29, host No. 5/5 Clemson (6-0) on Nov. 5 and travel to No. 6/7 USC on Nov. 26.
