Notre Dame landed its first commitment in the 2024 class on Saturday, and it was not an expected one. Nonetheless, it’s a great pickup for Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish coaching staff.

West Bloomfield (Mich.) High’s Brandon Davis-Swain, the nation’s No. 94 overall player and No. 8 defensive lineman per the 2024 On3 Consensus, announced his commitment to Notre Dame April 23. He visited for the Irish’s Blue-Gold game, and didn’t waste any time announcing his pledge.

“After long, long thinking I would like to say that I’m committed to Notre Dame football,” Davis-Swain tweeted. “And I would like to thank God first and my family and friends for being there with me through the good and bad times. GO IRISH.”

Notre Dame stole Davis-Swain out of Michigan’s backyard. He had visited Michigan on a couple of occasions and even previously declared it his dream school, but decided to pick the Irish over the Wolverines.

This weekend was Davis-Swain’s second visit to Notre Dame, as he also camped with the Irish last June.

He also held offers from the likes of Penn State, Ole Miss, Maryland, Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville, West Virginia, Tennessee and Illinois.

On3’s own rankings are a bit higher on the 6-3, 245-pounder than the industry average. On3 lists him as the No. 63 player nationally and No. 7 defensive lineman. Per the On3 Consensus and On3’s own rankings, he’s the No. 3 player from his home state of Michigan.

Notre Dame offered Davis-Swain on Pot of Gold day

The Fighting Irish have done their “Pot of Gold” recruiting day the past couple of years, offering dozens upon dozens of prospects in the rising junior class. The big recruiting initiative falls on St. Patrick’s Day, and Davis-Swain earned his offer from Notre Dame on that day.

“I talked to Coach Washington and he offered me,” Davis-Swain said after receiving the offer. “We had been talking a few times in the weeks leading up to the offer. He’s a really good coach and a cool guy. He said he loves my game.

“I love the school and coaches. The fit and feel there is nice. I was happy to receive the offer. It’s Notre Dame. It feels great getting an offer from Notre Dame.”

Davis-Swain plays some tight end at the high school level, but he’s committed to playing for defensive line coach Al Washington. He offers versatility to play defensive tackle or strong side defensive end.

“I play three and five technique; I can play a little bit of everything,” he said.

Davis-Swain also commented on what he was looking for in a school. He clearly found it in Notre Dame.

“Education and being able to go to a school where they love me,” he said.

During his sophomore season in 2021, Davis-Swain recorded 18 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, per M Live. He was named to the 2021 Division 1-2 Associated Press All-State football team.
