Five-star safety Caleb Downs schedules Notre Dame official visit
Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek class of 2023 five-star safety Caleb Downs will officially visit Notre Dame June 10-12, he announced on Twitter today.
This is big news from a Fighting Irish perspective, as Downs, who ranks as the No. 12 player and No. 1 safety according to the 2023 On3 Consensus ranking, is arguably the most talented prospect left on the Notre Dame board pound-for-pound.
The Fighting Irish have hosted Downs three time previously: last June, for the North Carolina contest last October and again for the Blue-Gold spring game April 23.
Getting him back on campus for an official visit will be a great opportunity for the staff to roll out the red carpet for him, and it shows that the Irish are still a major contender in his recruitment.
“I want to see what their plan is for me on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom,” Downs told Blue & Gold in regards to what he’s looking to see on his Notre Dame official visit.
As one could imagine, the competition for Downs is stiff. He also has official visits schedule for Georgia (June 3-5), Alabama (June 17-19) and Ohio State (June 24-26). Recruits are allowed to take five official visits; Downs has one more school to choose from for one, if he so chooses.
Downs says that he’s about 90 percent sure that he’ll be committing to a school before the start of his senior season.

Do the Irish have a chance for Downs?
The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) has Georgia and Alabama leading in his recruitment, respectively. But Notre Dame shouldn’t be counted out of the Downs’ sweepstakes, especially considering Notre Dame will host him on campus for a fourth time in a year and gets one of his five all-important official visit slots.
“It’s a great place to be,” Downs recently told Blue & Gold about Notre Dame. “It’s an awesome school to be a part of for your whole life. You’d be glad to say you went there even when you’re way past college. Notre Dame can give you everything you want.”
During Downs’ visit to South Bend in late April, he spent some time with alumni and learned more about what Notre Dame can offer him from them.
“The networking they have there is real,” Downs added. “I got to talk to two of their NFL guys — Julian Love and Jalen Elliott — and some guys who played 20 years ago. They all still hang out with each other, are really close and can rely on each other.”
