Does CJ Carr’s Notre Dame commitment alter the recruitment of Dante Moore?
Notre Dame did it. The Fighting Irish received a commitment from one of the best quarterback recruits in the country.
For years, the program has been trying to shed the stigma that it cannot get big-time signal callers to call South Bend home for a few years. Saline (Mich.) class of 2024 four-star CJ Carr fits the description of “big-time signal caller.” Thursday, he pledged to call South Bend home.
Progress.
But in the act of luring one big fish, did the Irish diminish their chances of securing the bite of another? Possibly. On3 Consensus class of 2023 five-star quarterback Dante Moore has been on Notre Dame’s radar for many months now. And though he didn’t say so Thursday, Carr’s commitment could affect the odds of Moore committing to Notre Dame himself this summer.
That doesn’t mean Notre Dame should stop recruiting him.
The job isn’t finished. Notre Dame has the ultimate goal of winning a national championship. Recent history proves to do so, elite quarterback play is often required. The perennial powers of the sport typically have multiple options to choose from at the most important position on the field. Notre Dame needs to prop up its roster so that it can say the same.

A few years of former four-star recruit Tyler Buchner, a sophomore, leading into Carr’s career is a start. But things don’t always go as planned. If Buchner does not pan out, and Carr does not reclassify to the class of 2023 (which isn’t entirely off the table), then Notre Dame will need a top-tier option in the more immediate future. That could be Moore, who will be ready to play college ball next fall.
It’ll all fall on Moore though. If the Carr commitment deters him because he feels like he’s not necessarily seen as the quarterback of the future at Notre Dame, then that’s a solid line of reasoning to go somewhere else. But if he welcomes the competition and believes he’ll be in a good spot to take over for Buchner and precede/beat out Carr, then Notre Dame could be the place for him after all.
One thing remains constant in all of this: Notre Dame should not feel like it has won the war by receiving the commitment of one top-five quarterback. Minor victory? Sure. But he still has not even signed on the dotted line. Until multiple highly-heralded quarterbacks do, the Irish still have a lot of work to do in quarterback recruiting.
