Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman didn’t overtly say the Fighting Irish roster is going to look a lot different from the beginning of December through the end of January, but he hinted at it. There has already been plenty of movement in and out of South Bend, and there will be more in the coming weeks.

“We need to kind of have an idea of what the future plans are for certain guys,” Freeman said on Dec. 4.

Below, you’ll find a constantly updated tracker of the following:

• Notre Dame players who have announced they’ll play beyond four years with the Irish.

• Notre Dame players who have decided to opt out of the Gator Bowl to enter the NFL Draft or transfer portal.

• Every Notre Dame scholarship player from the 2022 roster who has eligibility to return in 2023.

Who’s staying (graduate students)

This list includes the players who have made official announcements. If a player is not included in this segment, it does not mean they will not come back in 2023.

• Graduate student cornerback Cam Hart

Hart announced on Nov. 29 that he’ll return for a fifth year. Hart has started 20 games in the last two seasons. Freeman announced on Dec. 4 that Hart will undergo a second shoulder surgery in as many years. He will not play in the Gator Bowl as a result. He finished the season with 25 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 4 passes broken up.

• Graduate student long snapper Michael Vinson

Vinson announced on Dec. 2 he’ll return for a sixth year. A former walk-on, Vinson was put on scholarship prior to the 2022 season. He’s a three-year starter and a steadying presence for the Irish on and off the field.

• Wide receiver Matt Salerno

Salerno announced he’s returning for one final season in South Bend on Dec. 16.

• Safety DJ Brown

Brown announced he’s returning for a sixth season on Jan. 8.

Who’s going (transfer portal)

• Rising senior quarterback Drew Pyne

Pyne announced on Dec. 2 he’d enter the transfer portal. He officially entered the portal on Dec. 5. A 10-game starter for Notre Dame in 2022, Pyne went 8-2 and threw 22 touchdown passes with 6 interceptions. Freeman said he had an honest conversation with Pyne before he made his decision.
