Notre Dame wanted to be a run-first team from the start of the 2022 season. It took a few games to get into a groove, but the Fighting Irish are running wild.

Wilder than any other team in the country in one interesting statistic.

The Irish are the only team in the FBS that has three running backs with at least 85 carries. Sophomore Audric Estime has run 117 times for 662 yards and 9 touchdowns, sophomore Logan Diggs has 112 carries for 545 yards and 1 score and junior Chris Tyree has 85 totes for 348 yards and 2 TDs.

An Irish rushing offense that once ranked toward the bottom of the FBS, well into the 100s out of 131 teams, has risen to No. 28 nationally at 195.11 yards per game. The Irish have eclipsed at least 200 rushing yards in three consecutive games, all wins, two of which were over ranked ACC opponents.

Estime and Diggs have been largely responsible for the increased rushing output. Estime has back-to-back games of 100-plus yards. Diggs has hit that mark in two of the last three.

“I feel like personally my confidence is getting higher and I can say that for Logan too,” Estime said this week. “I know that for a fact his confidence is getting higher. But I feel like that comes from the offensive line. Trusting and knowing that they’re going to do their job makes me play faster and more free. I feel like every week I’m getting better trusting the teaching coach Deland [McCullough] is installing in me. I feel myself getting better week after week, day after day.”
