Two days into the spring 2025 transfer portal window, and Notre Dame’s activity has been rather quiet — on both sides of it. Not much going out, nothing coming in.

Of course, the headline of the day Thursday came in the form of senior quarterback Steve Angeli hitting the portal with two years of eligibility remaining. It always felt like the Fighting Irish were going to lose a signal-caller, and it ended up being the eldest among them. That leaves the Irish to choose between junior Kenny Minchey and sophomore CJ Carr as the starter for 2025.

The only other scholarship player that’s entered the transfer portal from Notre Dame is sophomore safety Kennedy Urlacher. The Irish are loaded at that position, and Urlacher seems to simply be seeking a faster route to defensive playing time elsewhere. He was a special teams staple for ND as a true freshman last season.

The Irish have also lost a pair of special teams walk-ons to the portal. Long snapper Rino Monteforte, ND’s primary placekicking snapper, went into the portal Wednesday. Kicker Zac Yoakam, a kickoff specialist in 2022 and a brief replacement for the injured Mitch Jeter in 2024, followed him on Thursday. Yoakam made 2 of 5 field goal attempts and 18 extra points.

The spring transfer portal window remains open through the end of next week. There could be more Irish players to keep an eye on. The Irish are not expected to take anyone in as a signee, though, unless something unforeseen arises.

Notre Dame tweets of the day

Angeli might’ve saved the Irish’s season in the national semifinal.

Who do you got — Carr or Minchey?

No matter who starts at quarterback for Notre Dame, the Irish should have another solid squad.

Fighting Irish quote of the day

“The most talented quarterback on Notre Dame’s roster is CJ Carr. That goes without saying. You just watch the ball come off his hand in practice and you’re like, ‘Golly. This guy is something else, man. He can throw it. He can absolutely throw it.’”
