Newsstand: Stanford running back E.J. Smith won’t play against Notre Dame football
Stanford will be without one of its best players when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish come up on the schedule. Cardinal head coach David Shaw announced Tuesday that running back E.J. Smith is out for the rest of the season with an undisclosed injury.
Smith, the son of all-time NFL rushing leader Emmitt Smith, ran 30 times for 206 yards and three touchdowns in Stanford’s first two games against Colgate and USC. He went down with the ailment against the Trojans and did not play a snap in Weeks 3 and 4.
The hope for Shaw was Smith, a junior, would be back on the field at the end of September or in early October. That won’t be the case.
“I don’t think there’s an option for him to continue,” Shaw said. “He’s got to get his body taken care of. Trust me, he wishes it was not this way. He told me last week, ‘Coach, I can’t wait to play against Oregon. I’m going to be there for you. I need to get back in there.’ But the doctors are right and it’s wise for him — both now and for his future — to get this taken care of and come back in ’23 bigger, faster, stronger.”

Smith ran five times for 25 yards and caught one pass for six yards against the Irish last year. He was having a breakout couple of games before getting injured this year. Stanford is 1-2 with a win over Colgate and lopsided losses to USC and Washington.
