Live game, score updates: Stanford at Notre Dame football

Stanford vs. Notre Dame live updates: First quarter

• Stanford wins the toss and defers to the second half. The Irish will receive.

• Notre Dame goes three and out after getting behind the chains with a false start prior to first down. Graduate student left guard Jarrett Patterson was hit with the flag.

• Stanford easily drives 66 yards on eight plays to open the scoring with a short rushing touchdown.

SCORE: Cardinal 7, Irish 0 with 10:05 left in the first quarter

• The Irish pick up their first first down of the game on an 11-yard rush by junior running back Chris Tyree, but they have to punt back to the Cardinal near midfield.

• Stanford goes backward on its next possession after a sack by Justin Ademilola and JD Bertrand and a fumble that lost more yards.

• Sophomore linebacker Prince Kollie blocks the Stanford punt to give the Irish the ball deep in Cardinal territory with four minutes left in the quarter.

• Notre Dame comes away empty-handed. Quarterback Drew Pyne turned third and 19 in to fourth and two, but sophomore wide receiver Jayden Thomas was stuffed on an end-around. The Irish turned the ball over on downs with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

End of the first: Cardinal 7, Irish 0

Second quarter

• The Irish nearly picked off a shovel pass and would have set themselves up inside the Cardinal 5 yard line, but it was ruled incomplete. They forced a Stanford punt and got the ball back at their own 35.

• On a drive that featured five rushing plays and two incomplete passes, Notre Dame stalls near midfield and has to punt back to Stanford with just over 10 minutes left in the quarter.

• Notre Dame forced a three and out. The Irish get the ball back at their own 40.

• Notre Dame goes three and out after losing eight yards on first down reverse to Braden Lenzy.

• Stanford sustains a drive deep into Irish territory, but the Cardinal can’t convert on fourth and 2 from the Notre dame 28 with 1:45 left until halftime. The Irish take over with a chance to tie before the half.

• Pyne fumbles, and Stanford recovers. The Cardinal work into position for a last-second field goal. The Cardinal kicker connects from 45 yards out.

Halftime score: Cardinal 10, Irish 0

Third quarter

• Stanford appears to have completed a third down pass into Irish territory, but the receiver’s foot comes down just out of bounds. The Cardinal punt back to the Irish, who get the ball at their own 16 with 12:55 left in the third.

• Notre Dame goes three and out.

• A 38-yard passing connection puts the Cardinal deep into Irish territory. The Notre Dame defense holds up and forces a 43-yard field goal. The Cardinal connect.

SCORE: Cardinal 13, Irish 0 with 8:44 left in the third.

• Notre Dame responds with a six-play, 76-yard scoring drive in 2:22 to get on the board. Audric Estime finished off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown. Tight end Michael Mayer had two catches for 33 yards on the drive. Running back Logan Diggs had 32 rushing yards.

SCORE: Cardinal 13, Irish 7 with 6:22 left in the third.

• Stanford turns it over on downs on fourth and 2 from the Irish 41.

• Notre Dame faces second and 14 from the Cardinal 41 at the end of the frame.

SCORE: Cardinal 13, Irish 7 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth quarter

• Notre Dame freshman wide receiver Tobias Merriweather‘s first career catch is a 41-yard touchdown from Pyne. The Irish take the lead for the first time.

SCORE: Irish 14, Cardinal 13 with 14:53 left.

• Stanford appears to turn the ball over on a Tanner McKee fumble, but the call on the field of a Notre Dame recovery is overturned. The officials say McKee’s knee was down. The Cardinal kick a 43-yard field goal to regain the lead.

SCORE: Cardinal 16, Irish 14 with 10:20 left.

• Notre Dame converts on fourth and short near midfield to keep a drive alive, but Estime fumbles a few plays later. Stanford recovers. The Cardinal take over on their own 21 with 6:35 left.

• The Cardinal convert on a major third down to get the ball out to the Stanford 46 with less than five minutes left. They move the chains again two plays later to get into Irish territory with just over three minutes left.

• The Irish take their first timeout of the half after a first-down run stuff. The Irish stuff second and third down, too. It’s fourth and 8 on the Irish 38.

• The Irish start from their own 10. Passes to Mayer and Diggs move the chains.

• Notre Dame can’t covert on fourth and 7.
