Live updates: Notre Dame football at Syracuse
Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame (4-3) have a chance to rewrite the narrative of their season with back-to-back games against ranked ACC teams. The first of those is a road test at No. 16 Syracuse (6-1) Saturday at 12 p.m. ET (ABC).

Notre Dame at Syracuse live updates: First quarter
• Notre Dame wins the toss and defers.
• Irish safety Brandon Joseph picks off the first Syracuse pass of the game and returns it for a touchdown.
SCORE: Irish 7, Orange 0 with 14:53 left in the first quarter
• An unsportsmanlike penalty on the Irish after the touchdown and a face mask penalty on the ensuing kickoff results in 30 costly yards. Syracuse sets up for its second possession near midfield.
• Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader shakes off the INT and leads a scoring drive that culminates in a touchdown toss to Oronde Gadsden II. It’s a seven-play, 53-yard drive.
SCORE: Irish 7, Orange 7 with 11:11 left in the first quarter
• The Irish drive deep into Syracuse territory on their first offensive possession of the game, but junior quarterback Drew Pyne can’t connect with junior tight end Michael Mayer on third down. The Irish settle for a 39-yard field goal attempt. Arkansas State graduate transfer Blake Grupe misses wide right. He’s now 8 for 11 on the year.
• Syracuse goes three and out on its third possession. The Irish get the ball back with four minutes left in the first quarter. It’s the first punt of the game.
• The Irish get sophomore running back Audric Estime in a groove with consecutive carries, but two false start penalties stop the possession in its tracks. The Irish punt back to the Orange with under a minute left in the first quarter.
• The Irish end the frame with a big tackle for loss to force third and medium at the start of the second quarter.
SCORE: Irish 7, Orange 7 at the end of the first quarter.
Second quarter
• Shrader looks long down the sideline on third and 7, but the receiver he connects with is out of bounds. Syracuse is forced to punt. The Irish get the ball at their own 45.
• The Irish methodically move down the field and finish a drive with a short touchdown run from sophomore running back Logan Diggs.
SCORE: Irish 14, Orange 7 with 8:23 left in the second quarter
• The Irish force a third-straight three and out of the Syracuse offense. Senior linebacker JD Bertrand sniffs out a screen on third and 7 for a short tackle for loss. The Orange punt, again, with 6:49 left in the second quarter.
• The Irish get away from running the ball and go three-and-out with two incomplete passes. They punt back to Syracuse with 5:48 remaining in the second quarter.
• Irish senior defensive end Isaiah Foskey comes up with his seventh sack of the second to force third and long. Shrader can’t complete a pass over the middle. Notre Dame gets the ball back with a chance to score before the end of the half.
• Pyne throws too high for Mayer and is picked off on a tipped pass. Syracuse returns it into plus territory with less than two minutes left in the first half.
• Syracuse goes for it on fourth and 7, and Bertrand tips a Shrader pass after he’s flushed from the pocket. The Orange turn it over on downs. The Irish get the ball back with a minute and a half left in the half.

• Pyne finds Mayer on a 37-yard go route. He hits him again for a gain of 11 to set up first and goal from the 3. The Irish go play action, and Pyne finds sophomore wide receiver Jayden Thomas cutting across the back of the end zone for a touchdown.
SCORE: Irish 21, Orange 7 with 17 seconds left in the second quarter.
HALFTIME: Irish 21, Orange 7
Third quarter
• Syracuse’s Shrader will miss the second half with an injury.
• The Irish punt from midfield after a wide receiver screen is incomplete intended for sophomore Lorenzo Styles on third down.
• Syracuse goes three and out on new quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson‘s first action of the game.
• A 38-yard Syracuse punt puts Notre Dame on the Orange 35-yard line. The Irish settle for a 31-yard field goal. Grupe connects.
SCORE: Irish 24, Orange 7 with 7:41 left in the third quarter.
• Del Rio-Wilson hits on a 30-yard pass. A holding penalty wipes out a gain on the ground for Del Rio-Wilson on third and 13. Syracuse faces fourth and 9 inside the Irish 40 and calls timeout.
• Syracuse connects on the 54-yard field goal attempt.
SCORE: Irish 24, Orange 10 with 4:57 left in the third quarter.
• Pyne is sacked on third and 7. The Irish punt the ball back to the Orange, who get the ball at their own 32 with 2:46 left in the third quarter.
• Del Rio-Wilson hits on back-to-back passes of 23 and 30 yards, and running back Sean Tucker gets into the end zone from four yards out to bring the home team within one touchdown.
SCORE: Irish 24, Orange 17 with 25 seconds left in the third quarter.
Fourth quarter
• The Irish go three and out and punt the ball back to the Orange.
• Howard Cross tips and pass and Marist Liufau picks it off for the Irish’s second turnover of the day on defense. Notre Dame gets the ball near midfield.
• The Irish convert on two third downs, including a gain of 11 from Pyne to sophomore wide receiver Deion Colzie on third and 6, to finish a touchdown drive with an 11-yard run by Estime.
SCORE: Irish 31, Orange 17 with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter.
• Clarence Lewis blocks a Syracuse punt. Estime scores from two yards out on the next play.

• Syracuse scores on a 13-yard touchdown to get back within two scores. The Orange went 75 yards in eight plays and only took 2:03 off the clock.

• The Irish sustain an eight-play, 45-yard drive to take 3:45 off the clock. They kick a short field goal to go back up by three scores.
