Head coaches: Texas A&M — Mike Elko (16-9 at Duke, first season at Texas A&M); Notre Dame — Marcus Freeman (19-8, third season at Notre Dame)

2023 team records: Fighting Irish — 10-3; Aggies — 7-6.

Noting Notre Dame: Notre Dame improved its record by one game going from year one of the Freeman era, 9-4, to year two of the Freeman era, 10-3; the Irish are looking for another step forward to make the College Football Playoff for the first time since the 2020 season … To get help get there, Notre Dame brought in Mike Denbrock from LSU, the architect of the nation’s No. 1 offense in 2023 … The Irish also brought in quarterback Riley Leonard from Duke, a dual-threat quarterback who can do some of the things Jayden Daniels did to make Denbrock’s offense so ferocious last fall … The defense, which ranked in the top five in yards allowed last season, is led by Al Golden for the third year in a row; he has several All-America candidates and NFL Draft prospects at his disposal, from defensive tackles Howard Cross III up front and Benjamin Morrison and safety Xavier Watts on the back end.

Noting Texas A&M: The Aggies went 45-25 in Jimbo Fisher’s six seasons as the program’s head coach. They never reached a win total of double digits with the best of the half-dozen years being a 9-1 campaign in the COVID-shortened 2020 season … Texas A&M has not won a bowl game since that 2020 season … The Aggies return 11 starters, seven on offense and four on defense, from a team that went 7-6 last season with a loss to Oklahoma State in the Texas Bowl … A&M’s prized possession in the transfer portal was Purdue’s Nic Scourton, who led the Big Ten in sacks in 2023 with 10 … The Aggies also received a transfer from Bowling Green edge rusher Cashius Howell, who had 9.5 sacks last season … Quarterback Conner Weigman has only made eight career starts, but he has thrown 16 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in them; he’s dangerous when healthy.
