Notre Dame football releases 2023 edition of 'The Shirt'
Notre Dame football’s 2023 edition of “The Shirt” is here. And to the delight of those in favor of the “Irish Wear Green” campaign, it’s green.
The Fighting Irish football program has released a shirt for Notre Dame fans to wear and be united by every year for over three decades now. This is the 35th edition of the tradition if you count every shirt design listed on “The Shirt”‘s website timeline plus the one released today.
The tradition started in 1990 to get ready for that year’s season opener vs. Michigan, but a second edition was released that year to celebrate the Irish’s 29-20 victory over No. 2 Miami midway through the season. Every year since 1991, there has only been one version of “The Shirt.”
For the second time in three years and the 18th time in its storied history, “The Shirt” is a shade of green.

“The Shirt” was last green in 2021. Notre Dame went 11-1 that year with an appearance in the Fiesta Bowl. There have been several different slogans and sayings used on “The Shirt.” This year’s is a play on the university’s fight song with the front lettering spelling out “March on to Victory.” The back says “Rally For Old Notre Dame.”
From “The Shirt”‘s website: Half of the proceeds from The Shirt go to The Shirt Charity, which helps students afford unexpected medical expenses. Remaining revenue is used to fund student clubs, organizations, and The Rector Fund, which allows all students to have the full Notre Dame experience regardless of their financial situation.
Friday night, Irish head coach Marcus Freeman helped release this year’s “The Shirt” along with a video screening outside the stadium in South Bend. At the end of the video, Freeman unzipped his jacket to reveal “The Shirt” to an ovation from onlookers in attendance. WNDU’s Matt Loch was on hand to capture the scene.
Freeman will be back at the stadium tomorrow for the annual Blue-Gold Game. Freeman commissioned a Blue-Gold Game draft Thursday morning to set rosters for each side. The game kicks off at 2 p.m. and is being streamed exclusively on Peacock. Stay glued to BlueandGold.com before, during and after the game for extensive coverage.
