NFL.com mock draft has new landing spot for Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer
Over the next three months, numerous mock drafts are going to give a predicted landing spot for Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer. NFL.com was the latest to do so Friday.
NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah has Mayer going in the first round of the draft, No. 24 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mayer would be teaming up with 2021 No. 1 overall pick and former Clemson standout Trevor Lawrence, who quarterbacked the Jags to a berth in this weekend’s divisional round of the playoffs.
Mayer would be Notre Dame’s second first-round selection in as many years and 11th since 2012. He left Notre Dame has the program’s all-time leader in receptions (180), receiving yards (2,099) and touchdowns (18) by a tight end.
There have been four tight ends picked in the first round of the last five drafts; South Carolina’s Hayden Hurst (No. 25 overall in 2018), Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson (No. 8 overall in 2019) and Noah Fant (No. 20 overall in 2018) and Florida’s Kyle Pitts (No. 4 overall in 2021).

Mayer is one of three tight ends Jeremiah sees going in the first round this year in addition to Utah’s Dalton Kincaid (No. 21 overall to the Los Angeles Chargers) and Georgia’s Darnell Washington (No. 27 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals). Mayer not being the first tight end drafted in April would be an interesting occurrence.
Notre Dame has had four tight ends selected in the same span. Cole Kmet was chosen first among all of those as a second-round, No. 43 overall selection in the 2020 draft. Tommy Tremble was picked in the third round, No. 83 overall in 2021. Alize Mack went in the seventh round, No. 231 overall in 2019, and Durham Smythe went in the fourth round, No. 123 overall in 2018.
In all, Notre Dame has had 25 tight ends picked in the history of the draft. Five of them were first-rounders; Ken McAfee (No. 7 overall in 1978), Tony Hunter (No. 12 overall in 1983), Derek Brown (No. 14 overall in 1992), Irv Smith (No. 20 overall in 1993) and Tyler Eifert (No. 21 overall in 2013).
