Former Notre Dame wide receiver Tobias Merriweather transfers to Cal
All four former Notre Dame wide receivers who entered the transfer portal since the regular season finale have now officially found new programs with which to play. Tobias Merriweather announced Thursday evening he’ll spend his final two years of eligibility at Cal.
He issued a statement to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
“Ultimately what led me to choose Cal was the opportunity to be featured in an offense,” Merriweather said. “When entering the portal I knew what I needed in order to continue to chase my dreams, Cal checked off all the boxes and then some. It’s a blessing to be in the position I’m in, going to another prestigious university alongside a coach like [Burl Toler III] who I’ve had a long standing relationship with and he has a tremendous amount of belief in me. Excited to get to work. Go Bears!”
Merriweather arrived at Notre Dame as a four-star prospect and the No. 23 wide receiver in the class of 2022 according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He struggled to earn consistent playing time as a true freshman. He only caught one pass, but it was a good one — a 41-yard touchdown against Stanford. As a sophomore, Merriweather came along a little and caught 14 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Still, Merriweather couldn’t quite make himself a staple of the Notre Dame offense even though the Fighting Irish were bombarded by injuries at wide receiver. Notre Dame fired wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey three days after the Stanford game, and Merriweather entered the portal one day later.

All in the same week, Notre Dame lost Stuckey, Merriweather, graduate student wideout Chris Tyree and sophomore WRs Braylon James and Rico Flores Jr. Tyree is at Virginia, James is at TCU and Flores is at UCLA.
Notre Dame replenished the roster with two transfer portal prizes in Florida International’s Kris Mitchell and Clemson’s Beaux Collins. The Irish just signed three freshmen in the recruiting class of 2024, too, including five-star Cam Williams from Chicago. Four-star talents Micah Gilbert and Logan Saldate joined him as wideouts in the class.
Notre Dame will very very thin at wide receiver in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29. The Irish are down to six on scholarship; graduate student Matt Salerno, juniors Jayden Thomas and Deion Colzie and freshmen Jaden Greathouse, Jordan Faison and KK Smith. Smith is making his career debut coming back from shoulder injury. Colzie has not played since September. Salerno, Thomas, Colzie and Greathouse were all limited at various points in the season with injuries of their own.
