It’s going to take a while for Notre Dame to work its way back into the top 10 of the polls. The Fighting Irish took the first step toward doing so this weekend in West Lafayette, Ind., though.

Notre Dame (2-1) moved up one spot to No. 18 in the Week 4 Coaches Poll after a 66-7 road victory over the Purdue Boilermakers. The Irish came in at No. 17 in the Week 4 Associated Press Poll, meanwhile, after falling from No. 5 to No. 18 with a Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois.

The Huskies are ranked as the No. 23 team in the country in the AP Poll. There are two other future 2024 Irish opponents ranked in the AP Poll; No. 11 USC and No. 19 Louisville. The Irish do not play the Trojans until the regular season finale in Los Angeles. Notre Dame has Miami (Ohio) at home this week before hosting the Cardinals at the end of the month.

Of note, Notre Dame’s Week 1 opponent, Texas A&M, has re-entered both polls. The Aggies are No. 24 in the Coaches Poll and No. 25 in the AP Top 25.

Everything is still ahead for head coach Marcus Freeman and Co. — from chances at ranked wins against the Trojans and Cardinals to possibly being able to say Notre Dame beat a ranked team in the season opener and lost close to one in Week 2.

Still, it’s likely going to take running the table to get into the 12-team College Football Playoff. Florida State dropping to 0-3 and no longer representing a quality data point on the schedule is a ding to the Irish’s overall optics. Future Irish foe Georgia Tech is not ranked, either.
