Notre Dame freshman WR Jaden Greathouse not expected to play vs. Duke
Notre Dame will be shorthanded at wide receiver Saturday night at Duke. Fighting Irish freshman wide receiver Jaden Greathouse is not expected to play.
Jack Soble of Blue & Gold was told by a source Greathouse hurt his hamstring in practice this week. The source said Greathouse will not play Saturday, even though he’d go through pregame warmups to test where he is at in his recovery. Tim Prister of Irish Illustrated first reported the news Saturday afternoon.
Greathouse broke out in the season opener against Navy in Ireland with two touchdowns. He caught another one at NC State. He ranks second on the team in receiving touchdowns. He’s also No. 2 on the team in receptions with 12. Overall, Greathouse has 12 catches for 166 yards and the 3 scores.
Greathouse has played the fourth most snaps of any Notre Dame wide receiver per Pro Football Focus. His 88 only rank behind junior Jayden Thomas’ 195, sophomore Tobias Merriweather’s 180 and fellow freshman Rico Flores Jr.’s 126.
Greathouse’s inactivity will likely lead to more playing time for senior Chris Tyree, who ranks fifth among Irish wide receivers with 79 offensive snaps this season. Greathouse and Tyree have shared the slot this season. Tyree has only played 20 or more snaps in a single game this season one time. Tonight, the number will almost assuredly jump to two. Notre Dame is going to need Tyree, who has 9 catches for 241 yards and 2 touchdowns this year, in a big way against a good Duke defense.

It’s important to note Thomas will not play. He hurt his hamstring in the Ohio State game and did not practice early this week. As of Thursday morning, Thomas had still not practiced. The Irish’s leader in receptions with 13 was officially ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff.
With Thomas out, Notre Dame will be without five scholarship wide receivers because of injury; freshmen KK Smith and Greathouse, juniors Thomas and Deion Colzie and graduate student Matt Salerno. Smith has been out since the preseason with a shoulder injury. Colzie got his knee scoped this week. Salerno has been walking around on crutches with a big cast on his leg the last few weeks.
Freshman Braylon James has not played outside of garbage time this year, but his services could be of use to Notre Dame in a massive matchup tonight. James has played 11 snaps all season. He might need to play 11 tonight for the Irish to have a balanced aerial attack.
