What NFL legend Larry Fitzgerald said to Notre Dame football team
You don’t have to twist any arms to get influential figures to speak before the Notre Dame football team. Peyton and Eli Manning did it earlier this year. So did fellow Super Bowl champion and former Fighting Irish wide receiver Derrick Mayes.
This week, it was future pro football Hall of Fame inductee Larry Fitzgerald‘s turn.

The Notre Dame football Twitter account sent out a one-minute clip of Fitzgerald, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection, imparting wisdom on this year’s Irish players. A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Fitzgerald played his college ball at Pittsburgh. He won the Biletnikoff Award in 2003. He spent all 17 of his NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
His playing days are over. So he made sure to tell the Irish to make the most of theirs.
“I would give anything to be in your guys’ seat,” Fitzgerald said. “All the things I’ve done in pro football and things like that, I lived my dream. But, man, this is the very best time in your guys’ lives. It’s here. It’s right now. You guys have the opportunity to go out tomorrow and practice and do something that thousands, millions, of people would love to do.

“You guys have the ability to write your own script this year. You guys control your destiny. Do you know how lucky you guys are to be in that position? Most people in the world do not have control of their own destiny. They don’t have goals like you guys do. They don’t have the opportunity to live their dream. You guys have that. Grasp that. Hold onto that. Realize how valuable of an opportunity that is that you guys have in front of you.”
Fitzgerald was a teammate of Notre Dame wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey in Arizona in 2011. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has used every avenue available to invite distinguished guests to talk to his team in his first year at the helm.
