Notre Dame freshman safety Adon Shuler updates injury status
News broke Feb. 9 that Notre Dame early enrollee freshman safety Adon Shuler would miss spring football due to a shoulder injury. In speaking with the media March 8, Shuler gave an update on where things stand in his recovery.
“It’s going well,” he said. “I got out of my sling today. I’m working, rehabbing. It was a minor thing that the coaches thought I should get done before the season.”
There’s no clear-cut timeline on when Shuler will be back to full-go; he’s not being rushed back to the football field. It does look like Shuler should be cleared well before the start of fall camp, though.
“It’s really day by day,” he said. “I’ll probably be 100 percent by May or June. I’m just working to getting one day closer.”
When asked about his goals for this spring, the former four-star recruit and All-American Bowl participant out of Irvington (N.J.) plans to do as much as he can considering the circumstances.
“To get back to 100 percent,” he answered. “I want to learn the playbook, get mental reps and contribute to the team the best way I can.”
Shuler also noted that he didn’t expect to get the surgery when he enrolled at Notre Dame. It was a setback for him, but he’s keeping his chin up.
“It’s a bump in the road, but I’ll be back,” he added.
From a workout perspective, there’s still a good bit Shuler can do, and he’s staying in shape. He’s working on his lower body and conditioning.

“The coaches have a plan [for me]. I still feel like I can play right now,” said Shuler. “I’m just sticking to the plan and not trying to do too much.”
Overall, Shuler feels like he’s in a great place in his transition from life in New Jersey to his new home in South Bend, Ind.
“It’s been great,” he said. “I’m around a lot of great people who are helping lead me in the right direction. It’s really good.”
Shuler was an early commitment for the Irish, picking Notre Dame over Penn State and Maryland back in August of 2021. Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas A&M and a handful of others offered Shuler after giving his pledge, but he never wavered and stayed true to his word.
According to the 2023 On3 Industry Ranking, Shuler ranked as the No. 294 overall prospect and No. 25 safety in America.
