Notre Dame guard Markus Burton named ACC Player of the Week

Notre Dame guard Markus Burton has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday morning.
Burton, the ACC’s leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, scored 24 points in Wednesday’s win over Stanford and 43 in Saturday’s quadruple-overtime win over California. He shot 21-of-46 (45.6 percent) from the field and 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from three-point range throughout the week.
The Mishawaka, Ind. native dropped 21 in the overtimes alone, despite fouling out with 2:40 left in OT No. 4, as the Irish outlasted Cal.
“I wasn’t gonna force it, but I knew it was my time to put on a show and will my team to victory, and that’s what I had to do,” Burton said. “I feel like the coaching staff trusts me, but also the whole team around me.”
This is the first ACC Player of the Week honor of Burton’s career. He won ACC Rookie of the Week four times (Jan. 2, Feb. 12, Feb. 26 and March 4) on his way to winning ACC Rookie of the Year.
With 43 points against the Golden Bears, Burton broke the program record for points in an ACC game. Matt Farrell previously held the mark with 37 on Feb. 7, 2018 at Boston College.

Additionally, Burton put up Notre Dame’s first 40-piece since Luke Harangody dropped 40 on Feb. 28, 2008 at Louisville. His 43 points were the most any Irish player has scored since Adrian Dantley had 49 against Air Force on Feb. 10, 1975 (all information on records is courtesy of Notre Dame Athletics).
“Markus was unbelievable,” Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “He was unreal.”
The ACC announces its season-long awards Monday evening at 5 p.m. on ACC Network, and Burton is a strong candidate for first-team honors despite missing seven games with a knee injury. He made the third team last season and was a preseason first-team all-conference player.
Burton will not be named ACC Player of the Year due to the presence of Duke forward Cooper Flagg, but he’s been among the league’s best players in his second season at Notre Dame. Since coming back from that knee injury, he led the Irish in scoring in 15 of their final 18 regular-season games.
Led by Burton, Notre Dame is the No. 12 seed in the ACC Tournament. The Irish will take on Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
