Notre Dame sophomore guard Markus Burton led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring at 22.2 points per game, but according to 81 media members and coaches, it wasn’t enough.

Burton was named to the All-ACC second team, coming in seventh place (five make the first team) with 238 voting points. He is the first ACC leading scorer left off the first team since Pittsburgh’s Michael Young in 2017, according to Notre Dame Athletics.

Additionally, junior Notre Dame forward Tae Davis finished third for ACC Most Improved Player, which went to Boston College guard Donald Hand Jr. He received eight votes to Hand’s 25, and Stanford’s Jaylen Blakes finished second with 22.

Burton was likely docked for his usage rate, which Notre Dame believed would go down after it was 10th in the nation and highest among high-major schools last season at 33.9 percent. Burton’s usage rate actually went up, rising to 36.0 percent. That ranked third in the entire country, behind only UC Davis’ Ty Johnson and Middle Tennessee State’s Brandon Walker.

Burton’s turnovers went down from his freshman year — 3.7 for game to 2.7 — but so did his assists, from 4.3 to 3.1. Team success likely hurt him, too; the Irish finished the regular season 8-12 in ACC play and 14-17 overall.

The Mishawaka, Ind. native also missed seven games due to a knee injury, which he suffered early in Notre Dame’s Nov. 26 loss to Rutgers.

Still, the Irish needed every ounce of Burton’s scoring output in order to avoid bottoming out. He averaged 26.6 points per game in the seven ACC wins he was a part of. He also left voters with an exceptional final impression: A 43-point outburst in a quadruple-overtime win over California on Saturday.

“I wasn’t gonna force it, but I knew it was my time to put on a show and will my team to victory, and that’s what I had to do,” Burton said. “I feel like the coaching staff trusts me, but also the whole team around me.”

Burton and the Irish will look to make a surprise run in the ACC Tournament starting 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday against Pittsburgh in Charlotte, N.C.
