Newsstand: Notre Dame hockey begins Big Ten tournament Friday vs. Michigan State
Notre Dame hockey won home ice for the first round of the Big Ten tournament by beating Michigan in overtime last weekend. The Irish begin their postseason quest at Compton Family Ice Arena Friday.
No. 4 seed Notre Dame (15-14-5) hosts No. 5 Michigan State (16-16-2) Friday for the first game of a best-of-three series. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET. Saturday’s game is at 4:30 p.m., and Sunday’s (if necessary) at 6 p.m. All games are televised on FS2.
Notre Dame won both games of the regular-season finale series at Michigan to snag home ice for the opening round. The Irish won the first game 4-3 in a shootout (officially credited as a tie, but shootout winners are awarded an extra point) and the second 2-1 in overtime. They went 1-2-1 against Michigan State this season, with two road losses, one home win and a home tie. The Spartans lead the all-time series 72-52-15, though Notre Dame has a 32-26-10 record against them at home.

All told, the Irish totaled 35 points in the regular season. Michigan State had 34. The winner of the series moves onto the Big Ten semifinals, which begin March 11. The Big Ten tournament champion gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
