Newsstand: Notre Dame hockey product Landon Slaggert scores first NHL goal
Just over one month ago Landon Slaggert was still busy captaining his Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team in the Big Ten Tournament. Two one-goal losses to Michigan were the final collegiate appearances of his career on March 8 and 9.
Wednesday, he scored his first career NHL goal for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Slaggert hit the offensive blue line with speed and received a cross-ice pass from teammate Ryan Donato. After a few strides on a mini breakaway he settled the puck on his forehand and ripped it blocker-side past St. Louis Blues netminder Joel Hoffer.
The tally only pulled the Hawks to within three goals of the Blues, the same margin by which the game ended, 5-2. But Slaggert, a 21-year-old South Bend native, signaled he should compete for an everyday spot on the roster next season with his first goal in his 12th game. He also has two assists since making his debut on March 15. Going into Wednesday’s tilt in St. Louis, Slaggert was averaging 10:54 of ice time with a plus/minus rating of +1.
