Newsstand: Notre Dame’s Pat Kavanagh named Tewaaraton Award finalist
For the second time in his career, Notre Dame men’s lacrosse senior Pat Kavanagh has been named one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award, which is given annually to the best player in the country. Kavanagh was also a finalist as a sophomore in 2021.
Kavanagh is the first player in program history to be a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist. This is the fifth time an Irish player has been a finalist. Tom Glatzel first landed on the list in 2001. Kavanagh’s brother, Matt, broke a lengthy streak without an Irish finalist when he became one in 2015. Defenseman Matt Landis followed suit the very next year.
Kavanagh leads the country in assists per game this season at 3.75. His 45 assists are the most in a single season in program history. He has also added 20 goals. His 5.42 points per game mark ranks second in the country behind Cornell’s CJ Kirst (5.79). Krist has a nation’s best 63 goals.
The Irish would not have the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament without Kavanagh’s overall impact game in and game out. He led the ACC in ground balls per game for attackmen (2.83) and caused turnovers for attackmen (.67).

Before then, a national champion will be determined. The Irish get the NCAA Tournament going Saturday in South Bend vs. Utah at 2:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU). The winner plays No. 6 seed Johns Hopkins or Bryant in the quarterfinals on May 21. The semifinals take place in Philadelphia on May 27, and the championship game is set for May 29.

“I’m not going to just say, ‘Oh, Michigan, I’m just going to go there.’ I’m going to explore my options and really just see the best place for me. A lot of great schools have offered me. I’m just trying to see how they run things and if I could see myself there.”
