Is North Carolina’s new team Notre Dame? That’s a stretch, but the Irish are certainly making themselves known on the East Coast, notably pulling recruits from the backyard of Clemson.

On Friday, head coach Marcus Freeman and offensive line legend Harry Hiestand landed four-star 2023 OL commit Sullivan Absher out of Belmont (N.C.) South Point, a suburb of Charlotte.

The 6-6, 275-pound tackle is the No. 15 player at his position, No. 5 North Carolinian and No. 176 recruit nationally, per On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3’s own recruiting team has Absher as a top-100 recruit, sitting in the No. 99 spot in the country.

Interior offensive lineman Sam Pendleton joined the Irish class on April 25 and hails from Pfafftown (N.C.) Reagan. Like Absher, Clemson was in Pendleton’s recruitment until the end and appeared as a finalist on his list. He chose Notre Dame.

As of May 15, Notre Dame has the top class in the nation according to the 2023 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings. You can meet the entire current 2023 class here.

Quote of the weekend

“It’s a special group, and they made this work for me. In between (coaches), they had to grasp this and go do it. And they have. They’ll always hold a special place for me. It’s not that (I) recruited them. They were here, and they jumped into what we were doing.”
