Newsstand: Jordan Faison shines in Notre Dame lacrosse season-opening win
The defending national champion Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team is back. And the Fighting Irish wasted no time putting a big number on the board.
Notre Dame defeated Cleveland State, 25-3, inside the Loftus Center on ND’s campus in South Bend on Wednesday evening. Irish wide receiver Jordan Faison, a freshman, started for the Irish and recorded a hat trick and an assist.
Junior Chris Kavanagh also had a hat trick and two assists, and graduate student Jake Taylor led the way with five goals. Graduate student Pat Kavanagh joined those two with five total points. All of the elder Kavanagh’s points came on setups for his teammates.

Former Notre Dame and Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner, now solely committed to lacrosse from an athletic standpoint, got into the game and recorded a ground ball on his stat sheet ledger. Buchner was an elite lacrosse recruit coming out of high school a few years back before deciding to fully focus on football. It’ll take him a bit to get to the point of becoming a regular contributor on a team as stacked as the Irish, a real candidate to go back-to-back with another natty.
The Irish continue their title defense on Saturday against Marquette in Milwaukee.
