Notre Dame at the NFL Combine, Sunday live blog: OL Jarrett Patterson goes through workouts
The last of four former Notre Dame players at the 2023 NFL Combine will take the Lucas Oil Stadium turf for workouts Sunday. Jarrett Patterson, a four-year starter for the Irish at center and guard, works out with the offensive linemen Sunday afternoon.
Sunday is the last day of workouts for prospects. Former Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer went Saturday, safety Brandon Joseph on Friday and defensive end Isaiah Foskey on Thursday. Offensive line workouts began at 1 p.m. Sunday, and running backs will go in the evening. The entire day’s workouts are televised on NFL Network.
Patterson started all 12 games he played in 2022 at left guard. He missed the opener with a foot sprain suffered in preseason camp. He started 34 games at center from 2019-21 following a redshirt season as a freshman. He ended his Notre Dame career with 0 sacks allowed in 1,688 career pass blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus. He allowed 37 career quarterback pressures, an average of .8 per start.
Patterson debated declaring for the NFL Draft after the 2021 season, but opted for a fifth year at Notre Dame instead. He said last January he returned because he wanted to be more pro-ready. He also liked the idea of playing for Marcus Freeman and then-newly hired (and now retired) offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. His return also made him a two-time captain.
“I really love Coach Freeman,” Patterson said at the combine Saturday. “He worked really that whole month of December into the bowl game before I decided to come back. I got a lot of respect for him. Bringing in Coach Hiestand is probably the biggest reason I came back. In talking to all the other alums that play for him, I asked him, ‘is this guy really legit?’ They all told me yes and raved about him. I wanted to experience that. At the same time, I got to learn how to play guard.”
Patterson is a projected Day 3 pick in the 2023 draft, a similar outlook to last year if he declared. He is PFF’s No. 9 interior lineman. The Athletic draft analyst Dane Brugler ranks him No. 11 at the position.
