WATCH: Five-star Notre Dame OT commit Will Black makes incredible highlight play
When a big man scores a touchdown, it’s usually a run that’s powered in from a yard or two out or play action where he sneaks out for a goal line score. But neither was the case when Notre Dame class of 2025 offensive tackle commit Will Black got in the end zone Saturday night.
Two of the top three teams in Connecticut per the On3 Massey Ratings faced off Nov. 2. No. 1 Choate Rosemary Hall battled No. 3 Avon Old Farms, and the top prospect on the field plays for Choate. It’s Black, who ranks as the No. 37 overall player and No. 6 offensive tackle nationally per the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
On3’s own rankings are higher on Black than the industry average, listing him as a five-star recruit, the No. 2 overall prospect and No. 1 offensive tackle in the land.
Black’s combination of size at 6-7.5, 283-pounds (he reports he’s closer to 295 now) and athleticism are outstanding, and he showed off how well he moves on his touchdown score Saturday.
With the ball at the Avon 49-yard line, Choate’s quarterback rolled right and then threw back to his left to Black, who was eligible to make the reception because it was a lateral. And what Black did with the ball was beyond impressive.

As seen in the video in the tweet above, Black catches the pass and runs 57 yards down the left sideline, breezing past multiple defenders. In the offseason, Black was recorded running a 4.9 40-yard dash, and he showed that speed off on the gridiron in a surprising score.
Choate would go on to win the contest 40-7.
For his efforts during his junior season in 2023, Black was named the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) lineman of the year. He was also named the Founders League lineman of the year and was listed on the All-Founders first-team offense.
The Notre Dame commit was recently named to On3’s “future freaks” list.
“Will Black‘s towering stature and ideal frame pair with top-shelf athleticism to make him one of the most physically-gifted offensive linemen in a historically loaded cycle at the position,” On3 director of scouting and rankings Charles Power said. “It wouldn’t be surprising to see Black maintain his sub-5.0 second speed at over 310 pounds after time in a college strength program.”
