Newsstand: Joe Alt touted as elite 2024 draft prospect in PFF top returning tackle rankings
Notre Dame’s Joe Alt has a strong claim to the title of best returning offensive tackle in college football. Pro Football Focus – which rated him as the top player at his position last year – supports the case.
PFF ranked Alt as the No. 1 player in its top 10 returning tackles for 2023, released Tuesday.
“An argument can be made that 2022’s best offensive tackle in college football is returning to school,” PFF’s Max Chadwick wrote. “Alt was both the highest-graded and most valuable tackle in the country according to PFF’s wins above-average metric. The sophomore’s 91.0 run-blocking grade led all FBS tackles while his 99.0 pass-blocking efficiency score was fifth.
“Alt looks like a potential top-five pick in 2024 and the best offensive tackle prospect since Penei Sewell.”

The Detroit Lions made Sewell the No. 7 pick in the 2021 draft. The former Oregon All-American was viewed as a future high-end prospect by the end of his freshman year. Alt had the look of a potential three-and-done player after starting the final eight games of his freshman season. He strengthened that claim with his play in 2022. He allowed 0 sacks and just 8 pressures in 13 starts, earning a spot on all five NCAA-recognized All-American teams. The Associated Press named him a first-team selection.
