Notre Dame an early offer for Penn State legacy Anthony Sacca
It’s not often that Notre Dame offers prospects when they’re still a freshman in high school. For those who do get the good news from the Irish staff at such a young age, that’s saying something about their skills on the field and potential in the classroom.
On Dec. 16, 2021, Philadelphia St. Joseph’s Prep class of 2025 safety Anthony Sacca added Notre Dame to his early offer sheet.
Notre Dame safeties coach Chris O’Leary and former tight ends coach John McNulty extended the offer to Sacca. McNulty played his collegiate ball at Penn State from 1988-1990, and the quarterback for the Nittany Lions during that time was Anthony’s father, Tony Sacca.
While that connection has dried out from a Notre Dame standpoint with McNulty off to Boston College, another interesting note is that Sacca’s father was highly considering the Fighting Irish before he picked the Nittany Lions.
“My dad actually was between Notre Dame and Penn State when he was deciding on a college, and he went on an official visit out there,” Sacca added. “So I’ve heard stories from time to time about them.”
The Notre Dame coaches gave Sacca rave reviews when they offered him a couple months ago.

“I talked to them for a little while on the phone. They said they thought I was something special, and my tape reminded them of how Kyle Hamilton plays,” Sacca said. “They told me I was a part of a select few people who have been offered in the class.”
Sacca is just one of five class of 2025 players thus far to receive an offer from Notre Dame, and he’s the lone defensive back to make the claim.
“I was honestly not expecting it,” Sacca said of the Notre Dame offer. “I had just woken up on a Thursday morning, and I didn’t really expect to get offered. I knew that they usually don’t offer till late sophomore year, so I was honored to get an opportunity that early from their coaching staff.”

The 6-2.5 200-pounder notes that he doesn’t have any planned visits for this spring yet, but he will likely made the rounds and could hit the camp circuit in June as well.
“I consider myself an athlete,” Sacca said. “I feel like I can almost play anywhere on the field. I’m only being recruited right now as a safety, I believe.
“I think I excel at covering a lot of ground in the passing game kind of playing center field back there and making plays when I need too.”
Penn State is considered the early favorite to land Sacca; the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has the Nittany Lions leading at 64.7 percent.
Ohio State, Miami, Kentucky, Tennessee, Notre Dame Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Nebraska are among Sacca’s offers.
His father completed 401 of 824 passes for 5,869 yards with 41 touchdowns and 24 interceptions from 1988-1991.
