On May 17, Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt had an On3 NIL Valuation of $9,300. One week later, the star tackle’s valuation has jumped to $511,000, a whopping increase of 5,441 percent.

Alt now has the 41st-highest NIL valuation in college football, and he is No. 52 on the On3 NIL 100 list, which is composed of college football and basketball players, along with high schoolers playing the sports. The only collegiate offensive tackle with a greater valuation than Alt is Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison ($523,000).

The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

There are a number of factors which impact the valuation, including social media presence. The 6-8, 305-pound tight end has a total of 2,900 followers between Instagram and Twitter. Over the last week, Alt’s Instagram following has increased 14.9 percent to 2,100, while his Twitter following is up 3.5 percent. His per-post value is around $141.

Since Alt’s social media numbers are still relatively low, the jump is likely due to the creation of a Notre Dame collective (FUND) and the fact that the Irish offensive line is one of the most visible position groups in the country. Additionally, Alt is already part of one of the more notable Notre Dame NIL deals: a relationship with Mission BBQ, a national company which has a location in Mishawaka, Ind. Mission partnered with the entire Irish offensive line, and the position group can often be seen eating there and doing service work in conjunction with the company.

Expectations are high for Alt’s second season

Alt arrived at Notre Dame as a lower-ranked four-star recruit. According to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he was the No. 6 player from Minnesota, No. 31 offensive tackle and No. 372 player nationally in the 2021 class. He made a massive jump in the On3 college ratings, which indicate production once a player arrives at the collegiate level, and is now listed as a five-star player ranked No. 3 at his position and No. 24 in the country.

During his rookie campaign, Alt played a total of 682 snaps and 596 on the offensive line, per Pro Football Focus. The lineman lined up at tight end a handful of times early in the season as well.

Alt was a part of an offensive line carousel with which former Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn played last season, due largely to numerous injuries. He started in the final eight contests, clearly finding his groove on the line. At the conclusion of the season, Alt had allowed three sacks, a quarterback hit and seven quarterback hurries. He was named a freshman All-American for his efforts by the Pro Football Writers Association.

Turning the page to his second season, the hopes for Alt are even greater. Offensive line coach Harry Hiestand is back for his second stint in South Bend and is considered one of the nation’s top position coaches. Combine Hiestand’s wisdom with a more experienced Alt, and you are likely to get one of the best offensive tackles in the country taking the field for the Irish each Saturday this fall.
