On Tuesday afternoon, Notre Dame dropped one of the most anticipated announcements of the winter: new jersey numbers. The Irish revealed numbers for every freshman and transfer addition who enrolled for the spring 2023 semester, as well as new numbers for six returning players.

Nearly every transfer addition kept their number from their previous school. Former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard is No. 13, earning a veteran player’s right to choose his number over a younger one. Freshman quarterback CJ Carr wore No. 13 in high school, but he will wear No. 12 with Notre Dame, at least at first.

Nickel back Jordan Clark (No. 1), wide receiver Jayden Harrison (No. 2), wide receiver Kris Mitchell (No. 10) and kicker Mitch Jeter (No. 98) will wear the numbers they wore at Arizona State, Marshall, Florida International and South Carolina, respectively. Only defensive end R.J. Oben changed his number when he changed schools, switching from No. 94 at Duke to No. 9 with the Irish.

In terms of number changes, four rising sophomores moved from a double-digit number to a single-digit number. Linebacker Jaiden Ausberry switched from No. 23 to No. 4, running back Jeremiyah Love switched from No. 12 to No. 4, wideout Jordan Faison switched from No. 80 to No. 5 and safety Adon Shuler switched from No. 21 to No. 8.

It’s not uncommon for a player to change the number they were assigned as a freshman, but Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa‘s No. 27 seems likely to stick. The top-ranked Notre Dame signee wore it at Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, and he replaces two-time captain and starting middle linebacker JD Bertrand at that number.

Here’s the full list of Notre Dame number changes and jersey numbers for Fighting Irish newcomers.
