Notre Dame reveals new numbers, number changes ahead of 2025 spring practice

CJ Carr‘s number at Saline (Mich.) High was 13. The four-star quarterback wore that number in all his visit photos, as well as his Notre Dame commitment graphic in June 2022. However, he had to settle for No. 12 as a freshman because No. 13 was occupied by senior signal-caller Riley Leonard.
With Leonard moving on to the NFL, Carr made the switch back to No. 13.
He’s one of five Notre Dame players who changed their numbers ahead of spring practice, which begins Wednesday morning. Another is sophomore cornerback Leonard Moore, who will wear No. 2 after starring in No. 15 his freshman year. Sophomore running back Aneyas Williams is a third, switching from No. 20 to No. 22.
Junior Devan Houstan, who switched from defensive line to offensive line after struggling to find a foothold in DL coach Al Washington‘s unit and will don No. 52. He previously wore No. 98. Additionally, sophomore offensive lineman Peter Jones changed his number from 73 to 77.
The Irish also revealed new numbers for their 13 early-enrolling freshmen and six early-enrolling transfers. Three of the transfers received single-digit numbers: former Alabama nickel back Devonta Smith (No. 0), former Wisconsin wide receiver Will Pauling (No. 7) and former Virginia Tech safety Jalen Stroman (No. 7).
