Before Sunday, the last time Notre Dame men’s lacrosse lost to a team not named Virginia was March 12, 2022. That 715-day streak ended when Georgetown attackman Aidan Carroll fired a shot past star goalie Liam Entenmann in overtime, upsetting the top-ranked Irish 11-10 in South Bend.

Notre Dame fell to 2-1, while the Hoyas, ranked No. 19 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association coaches poll, improved to 2-2.

Graduate student Irish attackman Pat Kavanagh scored with 39 seconds remaining in regulation to extend the game, tying it at 10. Georgetown had taken the lead 2:30 earlier, with Carroll scoring his second goal of the game at that point. He completed the hat trick with 1:58 remaining in the sudden-victory overtime period.

Notre Dame will look to bounce back at noon ET Sunday on the back end of its two-game home stand. The Irish will host Maryland in South Bend.

Notre Dame women’s lacrosse drops top-10 matchup

Just over a week after shocking No. 1 Northwester, Notre Dame women’s lacrosse suffered its first loss of the 2024 season. The Irish (4-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) fell to No. 7 Syracuse 16-14 on Saturday in South Bend, dropping from No. 2 to No. 5 in the Inside Across top 25.

With the game tied at 12, the Orange scored three-straight goals between 11:10 and 10:00 left in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame senior attack Abby Maichin scored her second goal off the bench with 1:03 remaining to bring the Irish within 2, but by then it was too little, too late. Syracuse outscored Notre Dame 6-1 in the third quarter and 10-4 in the second half after the Irish led 10-6 at the break.

Notre Dame goes on the road this weekend for the first time this season, facing North Carolina at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Notre Dame softball goes 2-3 in Mary Nutter Classic

The Irish faced four top-25 teams in five games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic from Thursday-Saturday in Cathedral City, Calif. They lost to No. 25/20 Mississippi State, No. 22 Baylor and No. 25 Oregon before beating Oregon State and No. 20 Utah in a double-header Sunday.

Notre Dame is 8-5 through three weeks of the season with a three-game series series at Virginia Tech up next.

The win over Utah was much-needed for the Irish, who defeated the Utes 7-1 two weeks after losing to that same team 9-3. Sophomore pitcher Micaela Kastor threw all 7 innings, giving up 11 hits but allowing only 1 to score.

Offensively, junior designated player Rachel Allen led the way with 3 hits — all singles — and 3 RBIs.
