Another day, another preseason poll. This time, it was Sports Illustrated’s turn. And it’s the latest ranking to put Notre Dame safety in the top 10.

The Irish are the No. 6 team in Sports Illustrated’s preseason top 25, which was released Tuesday. That’s one spot lower than their placement in the Associated Press top 25 and Coaches Poll, which were released earlier this month.

“Is this too high for a team with a new head coach and a new starting quarterback? Probably,” Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde wrote. “But everyone after the top three has question marks.

“The proven commodities on the Fighting Irish roster include some big-time talents: tight end Michael Mayer, center Jarrett Patterson, defensive end Isaiah Foskey, middle linebacker JD Bertrand and Northwestern transfer safety Brandon Joseph. The season-ending injury to receiver Avery Davis in preseason camp takes away a big-play threat.”

Notre Dame is behind No. 1 Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and Utah. No. 7 Clemson, Texas A&M, USC and Oklahoma comprise the rest of the top 10.

Three Irish opponents are in the top 10: Ohio State, Clemson and USC. No. 21 BYU is the only other foe to appear in Sports Illustrated’s ranking.

“I would give anything to be in your guys’ seat. All the things I’ve done in pro football and things like that, I lived my dream. But, man, this is the very best time in your guys’ lives. It’s here. It’s right now. You guys have the opportunity to go out tomorrow and practice and do something that thousands, millions, of people would love to do.”
