Newsstand: Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer not in first round of latest Pro Football Focus mock draft
Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer is jockeying with Utah’s Dalton Kincaid as the No. 1 tight end in the 2023 NFL Draft. Even if he no longer appears above Kincaid in some mock drafts and prospect rankings, he’s still widely projected as a first-round pick.
Widely, though, is not unanimously. Pro Football Focus draft analyst Trevor Sikkema’s three-round mock published Thursday has Mayer outside the first round. Mayer is the No. 33 overall pick in Sikkema’s mock, going to the Houston Texans. That may not even be the most interesting tight end-related part. The first tight end taken is neither Mayer nor Kincaid. It is Georgia’s Darnell Washington, at No. 28 overall. Kincaid appears three picks later.
Two other Notre Dame players appeared in Sikkema’s mock: defensive end Isaiah Foskey at No. 76 overall to the New England Patriots and offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson at No. 89 to the New York Giants.
Other recent mock drafts still have Mayer in the first round. CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards, who previously had Mayer outside the first round, slotted him at No. 14 overall to the Patriots and as the first tight end taken in a new mock Thursday. ESPN’s Todd McShay’s most recent mock, released March 10, has Mayer at No. 15 overall to the Green Bay Packers and TE1. Pro Football Focus’ Mike Renner ranks Kincaid as the top tight end, but still sees Mayer as a first-rounder.

“I’d be absolutely floored if he falls out of the first round,” Renner told BlueandGold.com last week. “It’s just not a good enough outside of tight ends – just not enough first-rounders to justify Mayer falling to the second.”

“I don’t think the game plan is going to change too much, but we just have to be ready. They obviously have a lot of great players, a lot of different weapons. We need to be prepared and focused.”
