Notre Dame added another prime time game to its schedule. The Irish will face Duke at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 30 in Durham, N.C., the schools announced Monday morning.

The game will be televised on ABC. In all likelihood, ESPN/ABC’s No. 1 broadcast team of Chris Fowler (play-by-play) and Kirk Herbstreit (analyst) will have the call.

Duke burst onto the national scene in Week 1 with a 28-7 win over Clemson that kicked off at 8 p.m. ET on Sept. 4 — a Monday night — on ESPN. The Blue Devils showcased their improved defense, sacking Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik twice and forcing three turnovers: an interception by linebacker Dorian Mausi and two fumbles, one forced by defensive end Anthony Nelson Jr. and one by defensive tackle Aaron Hall.

Duke took care of business in Weeks 2 and 3, winning home games against Lafayette (42-7) and Northwestern (38-14). The Blue Devils are 3-0 heading into a tilt with UConn at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, Conn., on CBS Sports Network.

Junior quarterback Riley Leonard leads the Blue Devils through the air, and he’s been a dangerous weapon on the ground, too. Leonard has 530 passing yards on 65 attempts and 1 touchdown this season, as well as 208 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. The Blue Devils returned all of their receivers for 2023, including senior Jalon Calhoun (14 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown so far in 2023) and junior Jordan Moore (12 for 160 and a score of his own).

Duke’s coach is former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Mike Elko, who has engineered a turnaround for the ages in his first season and a quarter. Elko took over program that went 3-9 in 2021 and took it to 9-4 in 2022. Elko and company cemented themselves as a threat to win the Atlantic Coast Conference when they knocked off then-No. 9 Clemson in Week 1.

Notre Dame has played Duke three times in the past decade, going 2-1. The Irish beat the Blue Devils 27-13 in 2020 in South Bend, and they won 38-7 in 2019 in Durham. Duke knocked off Notre Dame 38-35 in 2016 in South Bend. The Irish are 5-2 all-time against the Blue Devils.

Notre Dame is 4-0 and faces Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend. The game will be broadcast on NBC.
