Notre Dame women’s basketball adds coach with NBA experience to staff
Notre Dame women’s basketball isn’t short on coaches with diverse backgrounds. The Fighting Irish officially added another one who fits the mold.
Wednesday, the program released news of the addition of Shane Turner to head coach Niele Ivey‘s list of assistants. Turner comes to South Bend after a one-year stint as the video coordinator for the Memphis Grizzlies’ G League team, the Memphis Hustle.
Turner was previously the travel coordinator for the Hustle and an operations assistant for the Grizzlies. Ivey, of course, returned to Notre Dame in 2020 after spending one season with the Grizzlies as an assistant.
“We are so excited to welcome Shane to the NDWBB family as our new video coordinator,” Ivey said in a statement. “Shane spent the last few years working with the Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis Hustle, and I am so excited for him to share those experiences with us. Shane is super organized and hardworking and has a great basketball mind. He will be a great addition to our team.”
Turner was responsible for filming games, keeping up with offensive and defensive video playbooks and preparing team scouts in Memphis. He’ll have a similar day to day outlook with Notre Dame.

Turner got his start at his alma mater, Duke, as a manager for the men’s basketball team. He graduated in 2018 with a degree in political science. He reported to possibly the greatest coach in NCAA men’s basketball history in Mike Krzyzewski.
Turner joins a Notre Dame staff comprised of associate head coach Carol Owens, assistant coaches Michaela Mabrey and Charel Allen, director of operations Angie Potthoff, player developmonent program director Carlos Knox and program manager Sharla Lewis. Knox and Lewis are the only new additions to the staff. Knox’s position is new, and Lewis is replacing James Spinelli, who was named an assistant at Northeastern earlier this year.
